VARDESSA / THE DOOM AGES
The country they could not keep.
MOUNT CENERATH · The Ashen Crown · 3,240 m
The eruption and its aftermath.
A great snow-capped volcano on the northern Greyspine, above the western Orsava headwaters. Its flank streams descend into the upper Avel. It is the highest peak in the mapped Crownlands.
Cenerath eventually erupts and begins the Doom of Vardessa. The northern valleys suffer first. Volcanic debris and meltwater descend through the Orsava headwaters into the Avel; ashfall and repeated disruption damage harvests, stores and roads across the realm. The disaster unfolds into the Doom Ages: broken trade, failed provisioning and displacement make survival impossible for the old rival courts acting alone.
Cenerath’s runoff joins the upper Avel rather than creating a river that ends inland. During the Doom, destructive debris follows those same valleys. Effects across distant holds also come from disrupted food, trade and movement; lava is not depicted flowing across every mountain and coast.
The Ashen Compact.
During the Doom Ages, the surviving Houses form the Ashen Compact beneath the Fachelli crest. Fachelli commits its surviving treasury and claims overall command; Vespucci brings the organisation and passage needed to lead the exodus. The others commit the skills without which neither money nor ships can save a people. Their union begins here, before Montaro.
Each surname becomes a promise of a particular contribution. Descendants inherit a House specialty, its training and its duties within one cohesive Family. The modern gang is made of all seven specialisms working together, rather than seven unrelated gangs competing for the same work.
Beyond Vardessa.
The survivors leave Vardessa together and carry the Family into other worlds. Shared command, work and history replace the seven competing households as the basis of survival. The routes between worlds and the rules of each later setting will be established chapter by chapter; the Compact does not overwrite a host game’s geography or calendar.
The eruption year, its duration, named survivors, casualty lists, individual Compact signatories and the exact passages into other worlds remain unrecorded. The founding elders are not automatically declared dead or made to survive across centuries. Existing modern events, including Tony Bambino’s period in command, remain history.
SEVEN SURNAMES · SEVEN RESPONSIBILITIES
The work that held them together.

The surviving treasury pays for passage and provisioning. Fachelli accepts a united command built on skills it once treated as beneath its own dynasty.
Today: Senior Family leadership, strategic planning and treasury oversight. A leader is accountable for making all seven specialties work together.
Sets priorities with Vespucci and funds Garbonzo production and Bambino supply.

Its ships, pilots and coalition organisers lead the exodus. The rival claimant carries people beneath the Fachelli crest without losing its ability to lead.
Today: Game leaders, chapter heads, expedition organisers and operational coordinators.
Turns Fachelli strategy into sessions and objectives, coordinating each specialist House.

Couriers find usable routes and archive keepers preserve names, oaths and accounts as the old country is lost.
Today: Scouts, intelligence players, researchers and record keepers who turn observations into useful, attributed information.
Informs command and diplomacy, scouts for armed teams and preserves the evidence behind the Family’s history.

Herd routes and provisioning contracts become ration stores, supply manifests and the work of feeding displaced households through the escape.
Today: Salespeople, traders, procurement specialists, stock keepers and supply coordinators.
Buys inputs for Garbonzo, distributes its output and keeps crews supplied, with Lombardo protection when needed.

Winter survival becomes the craft of keeping an exodus alive: repairing transport, making equipment and preserving working tools and reserves.
Today: Crafters, builders, repair specialists and production organisers. Materials may be gathered locally or supplied by the other Houses.
Turns materials procured by Bambino into equipment and goods needed by every House.

Companies once hired by rival courts defend the common evacuation and its vulnerable convoys. Their fighting force acquires a lasting Family obligation.
Today: Combat-focused players, shooters, tactical squads, trainers and protection details. Weapons and tactics follow each game’s rules and era.
Protects Bambino deliveries and Vespucci operations using Luciani information and Garbonzo equipment.

The bridge brokers turn incompatible claims into the Ashen Compact and negotiate passage, duties and disputes among the survivors.
Today: Political players, diplomats, negotiators and representatives who connect the Family to a world’s institutions.
Negotiates access and agreements, working with Fachelli command and Luciani assessments.
One chain of command, a complete Family.
Fachelli supplies the senior command tradition and treasury; Vespucci supplies chapter and expedition leadership. Specialist House heads lead their own work under the Modern Day Commission. The Commission appoints the actual officeholders and ranks in the current timeline; a surname identifies a specialty but cannot grant account permissions or appoint someone to command by itself.
Content creators can tell the stories of any specialty. Secondary skills can cross House boundaries, while the surname remains a clear primary responsibility. A proposed change of House or inherited role belongs in the Commission’s continuity review.
The elders and their descendants ↗Why a battle belongs in history.
A remembered war must change something. Rival colours alone are not a sufficient reason to fight.
- Material cause: the resource, succession claim, route, security threat or obligation at stake.
- Immediate trigger: what happened to make negotiation or the previous balance fail.
- Participants and objectives: who chose to fight, what each side wanted and what would make them stop.
- Place and constraints: why this battlefield, season, supply route and terrain made the clash possible.
- Outcome and cost: who gained or lost what, including displacement, debts, damaged trade and unresolved claims.
- Historical purpose: the law, border, oath, family branch or memory changed by the conflict.
- Evidence and viewpoints: linked scenes or approved lore, with conflicting accounts and later songs attributed.
Red Ford Field and Broken Lances remain reserved sites with unrecorded incidents. Red Ford controls the quarry spur; Broken Lances sits on an inland market junction. Those facts supply stakes for a future story, not permission to invent a battle result.
A possible cause, not a recorded event
A quarrel over increased stone-cart tolls can become a confrontation at Red Ford if a claimant needs the quarry revenue and the other side refuses passage terms. This is a possible story seed, not an established battle. A chronicle would still need the trigger, actors, result and lasting consequence.
